Waiting for my room to be cleaned

Tuesday, June 24: Greetings from Lima! After some tense moments making my flights in Washington and New York, I arrived at 6.05 am at the Jorge Chavez airport in the Callao prefecture. Thanks to a glass of wine and a single dose of Ambien CR, I can report that what little I remember of the flight was quite pleasant. I'm ready to go!

Unfortunately, my room is not. I am waiting for another guest to checkout first, and then for the room to be cleaned. So I am taking my coffee downstairs in the foyer of the very handsome colonial style building that the Antigua Miraflores Hotel occupies. Meanwhile, my cousin and his fair lady, having preceded me by 8 hours, are still sound asleep in their room.

Fortunately, the hotel has free internet, so I am able to take a moment to make this entry. I'll be back later today with some updates on our first day's activities.

I certainly hope you guys are really "hiking the Inca Trail" and not following the lead of SC Gov. Mark Sanford:

With the bizzare relevation that Sanford was AWOL for five days in Buenos Aires -- and not hiking the Appalachian Trail, as his staff had said -- we think it's fair to say today may mark the death knell for two 2012 Republican presidential hopefuls.
