Inca Trail Day Three: Sayaqmarka Ruins

On a trail of true spectaculars, perhaps the most spectacular sight of all. One drops over the second pass and shortly comes Sayacmarca into view, sitting atop a steep overhanging cliff, with incredible views of mountains in the background, Salcantay in particular. It's name means town in an inaccessible place. A tiny little ruin, Conchamarca, sits far below it next to a running creek. Unbelievable. The site is a strange one, because there it is a poor spot for agriculture and most food had to be carried in from over one or the other pass and better sites. Not a real religious place either, based on its shape and the lesser quality of stone work. Just a small city, in a strange, incredible place.
